I was originally going to take weeks over this tribute. I was going to plan every song, even every mix. I probably would have practiced it ten or twenty times to make sure I played every track I wanted to, and in an order which flowed seamlessly. But one sunny day in Cyprus – a couple of days after the great man’s passing – I was requested to play at Nissi Bay; Ayia Napa’s world famous beach.
The whole thing is a little messy, and I didn’t play every track I would’ve done if I had planned it thoroughly since I was restricted by time, equipment and the odd request for ‘funky’.
I always played his music instinctively and out of choice not necessity, and this selection is testament to that. I just hope I did the man and the songs justice.
This mix is not perfect, and neither was he; but his music was damn close.
